    Abstract

    This study aims to see how Iranian cities urban discourses are celebrating diversity. The comprehensive plans of the five most diverse cities of Iran are analyzed based on six diversity policies categories through a content analysis methodology. Results indicate that Iranian cities comprehensive plans are prone to celebrate diversity. Still, they are not designed based on the whole idea of diversity and “diversity in planning” is more considered than “planning for diversity”. Hence, plans must consider policies in a way that they contribute to the recognition of diverse people and their needs, make their voices be heard and redistribute goods and services based on diverse individuals’ needs. Through their policies, th

    Urban growth containment policies for the guidance and control of peri-urbanization: a review and proposed framework

    Journal Papers , 2021 February 13, {Pages 30-Jan }

    Abstract

    The purpose of this study is a review of urban growth containment policies for the guidance and control of peri-urbanization. The review of selected resources illustrates two policies: "urban growth containment policies based on planning interventions (UGCPI)" and "urban growth containment policies based on financial interventions (UGCFI)". The analysis of these policies reveals their distinct effects inside and outside the metropolitan boundaries, which, despite the positive results, create various practical consequences and challenges. This highlights the necessity of a special framework of growth guidance and control of peri-urbanization in response to the consequences and challenges of previous policies. The proposed framew

    Abstract

    This paper couples a Forward Feature Selection algorithm with Random Forest (FFS-RF) to create a transition index map, which then guides the spatial allocation for the extrapolation of urban growth using a Cellular Automata model. We used Landsat imagery to generate land cover maps at the years 1998, 2008, and 2018 for the Tehran-Karaj Region (TKR) in Iran. The FFS-RF considered the independent variables of slope, altitude, and distances from urban, crop, greenery, barren, and roads. The FFS-RF revealed temporal non-stationary of drivers from 1998–2008 to 2008–2018. The FFS-RF detected that altitude and distance from greenery were the most important drivers of urban growth during 1998–2008, then distances from crop and barren were the

    Explaining objective forces, driving forces, and causal mechanisms affecting the formation and expansion of the peri-urban areas: A critical realism approach

    Journal PapersLand Use Policy , Volume 102 , 2021 March 1, {Pages 105232 }

    Abstract

    Accelerated urbanization in peri-urban areas of metropolises is one of the emerging issues of the past decades which has numerous physical, social, economic, and environmental consequences in these areas. Such a process converts the peri-urban areas into a challenging part, the guidance of which requires a comprehensive understanding of them in all its dimensions. The most important of these dimensions are effective forces and mechanisms in the formation and expansion of peri-urban areas around metropolises. With this in mind, this paper, using a critical realism approach and a systematic review, explains first the effective objective forces in the formation and expansion of peri-urban areas in the form of different patterns of peri-urbaniz

    Exploring an integrated spatially model for land-use scenarios simulation in a metropolitan region

    Journal PapersEnvironment, Development and Sustainability , 2021 January 16, {Pages 22-Jan }

    Abstract

    Spatial simulation of land-use change scenarios in metropolitan areas is essential for analyzing both the causes and consequences of various future scenarios and is also valuable for land-use planning and management. However, current simulation models primarily focus on spatial and rarely on quantitative driving factors. This article aims to simulate future scenarios of land-use changes in the Tehran metropolitan region (TMR) by combining different models to fill this gap. Thus, in the first step, land-use changes were analyzed in the period 1985, 2000, and 2015. Then, by identifying the impact of driving factors and land-use transition potentials with Logistic regression (LR), land-use changes were allocated using the Cellular Automata (CA

    Spatial Structure and Inter-Urban Relations: A Scientometric Mapping Approach

    Journal Papers , Volume 31 , 2021 January 1, {Pages 1 }

    Abstract

    Over the last two decades, the focus of studies on the spatial organization of urban systems has shifted noticeably from classical theories such as “the central place theory” to utilizing novel theories based on the network essence of intercity relations, such as “the central flow theory”. This field of urban research, which has emerged under the term “external urban relations”, has developed through integrating contributions from many disciplines. However, different methodological traditions and interdisciplinary contexts in which the research is conducted are leading to ambiguity in how we understand and measure intercity relations. This study systematically reviews and analyzes the body of this new literature. It does so by i

    Analysis of spatial form and demographic changes of Shiraz metropolitan area during the period 1996-2016

    Journal PapersTown and Country Planning , 2021 February 16, {Pages }

    Abstract

    The number and population of metropolitan areas have increased significantly during the last century. Also, along with the increase in population, improved communications, and other global trends, there have been changes in these areas' spatial development. At the same time, these Changes are observed in metropolitan areas of the country, but studies have been limited to understand the Changes in these areas in Iran. In this study, the urban land density (U.L.D) function has been used to investigate the trend of spatial development in Shiraz's metropolitan area from 1996-2016. The results show that the Shiraz metropolitan area has experienced a decentralized and scattered spatial form from 1996 to 2016. The pattern of changes in the region'

    Abstract

    This study analyzes the spatio-temporal patterns of urban growth for the Kolkata Urban Agglomeration (KUA) in eastern India using dynamic spatial territorial extents and compares the results with existing popular hypotheses of urbanization patterns (diffusion-coalescence and three-growth-mode). Time series neighborhood-level built-up densities were extracted and overlain to identify two broad urban spatial extents, inner and outer, which were further categorized into sub-territorial units. Landscape metrics and mode-wise urban growth statistics were computed for the above spatial extents. Results reveal a marked increase in the urban land share, from 20 % in 2000 to nearly 50 % in 2018, when about 75 % of the built-up spaces comprised the h

    Making the invisible segregation of diverse neighbourhoods visible

    Journal PapersJournal of Housing and the Built Environment , 2021 May 8, {Pages 24-Jan }

    Abstract

    There are not clear understandings of the mechanisms of diverse populations in Tehran although it is considered as one of the most diverse metropolitan cities in the middle east. This unexplored context in terms of diversity makes Tehran a unique context not only for exploring its social geography but to respond to a conflict among scholars who believe that diversity acts as an anti-segregation policy and those who believe that it ends in the rise of in-group contacts and causes segregation. To these ends, spatial analysis and inferential statistics are used. Results indicate that diverse populations of Tehran have given rise to the formation of diverse neighbourhoods—where different socioeconomic groups and physical structures are locate

    Journal PapersTransport Policy , 2020 January 27, {Pages }

    Abstract

    The relationship between seaports and hinterlands play an important role in shaping the spatial structure of a country. The present article intends to explore the port-hinterland commodity relations in the last two decades in Iran by using a social network analysis method to analyze the intensity, direction, and concentration of commodity flows and to explain the spatial structure of port-hinterland relations. The results indicate that the southern ports of Iran have strengthened the centrality of the main inland city. Most selected indicators show that the three nodes including Tehran, Bandar Abbas, and Mahshahr Port have been the most interacting and exchanging commodity flows during the recent two decades. Thus, we can conclude that Tehr

    A genealogy of the five schools of justice in planning thought

    Journal PapersHabitat International , Volume 101 , 2020 July 1, {Pages 102189 }

    Abstract

    Justice is one of the main goals of planning thought which has been widely accepted by scholars over various periods. Due to its specific historical, social, moral, and philosophical characteristics, various theories in the field of justice in planning have been put forward, but so far no study has been conducted to explore and describe justice schools of planning thought. To this end, the main objective of this article is to explore a genealogy of the justice schools in planning thought. Accordingly, five equity, communicative, just, critical-spatial, and southern schools of thought were identified in the field of urban studies and planning. The results indicate that justice schools in planning thought have evolved from the equity in the 1

    Driving factors of formation, development, and change of spatial structure in metropolitan areas: A systematic review

    Journal Papers , 2020 August 6, {Pages }

    Abstract

    In the last decades, there have been many articles on the spatial structure of metropolitan areas, but a study for explaining driving factors of changes in the spatial structure of metropolitan areas has remained unknown so far. To fill this gap, the article explains the driving factors of these changes using a systematic review method. To this end, 115 peer-reviewed scientific articles published from 1999 to 2019 were carefully analyzed. According to the results, 4 main dimensions including contextual and intrinsic, incentive and disincentive, developmental, and transformative were identified in this regard. This article argues that spatial structure subject to the driving factors have undergone vast changes over the past two decades, and
