Industrial Engineering

Industrial Engineering is concerned with design, improvement, and installation of integrated systems of men, materials, and equipment. It draws upon specialized knowledge and skill in the mathematical, physical, and social sciences, together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design, to specify, predict, and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems. The industrial engineering group currently offers two focus areas: Industrial Engineering, and Healthcare Systems Engineering.

Health Systems Engineering

Faculty of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Tarbiat Modares University is the pioneer in Iran to offer a Master s degree in Health Systems Engineering since 2013. This specialization is among recent and rapidly growing focus areas in industrial engineering worldwide that was first offered in 2009.
The significance of this field of study is such that the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) has been holding a specialized bi-annual conference titled "INFORMS Healthcare" since 2011, in addition to the healthcare stream talks presented at the main INFORMS annual conference.
Tarbiat Modares University was also the first Iranian university to join the "Health Systems Engineering Alliance", an alliance of over 40 top universities worldwide active in teaching and conducting research in this field.
This specialization aims to apply industrial engineering techniques in the health sector, with the goal of promoting quality, increasing equity in access to services, enhancing patient satisfaction, and reducing costs in a variety of health care settings including public health, health services delivery organizations (such as hospitals and physician offices), the pharmaceutical and medical devices industry, medical insurance organizations, as well as health policy and planning.
For instance, in the case of health services delivery organizations, the specialization aims to reduce patient wait times, improve patient appointment and nurse scheduling practices, and improve operating room utilization by reducing waste.
The curriculum includes specialized courses in applications of industrial engineering methodologies such as operations research, simulation, data mining, information technology engineering, quality management, standards and accreditation, and strategic management to the health sector. To best familiarize students with the context of health systems, prerequisite courses have been designed that are generally taught by affiliate professors with significant clinical and managerial experience in the health sector.
Students also complete two internships in the field, generally taking advantage of the close academic relationships between Tarbiat Modares University and prominent Iranian hospitals such as Shahid Hasheminezhad Hospital, The Tehran Heart Center, and Moheb Hospitals Group. The internship opportunity familiarizes students with real world issues facing health care organizations, helps them define and tackle those issues through applied research, and generally helps as an opportunity for students to start a meaningful career path in health systems engineering.
